Wales 2017 By Sebastian Lo

This was a really fun but challenging trip. The weather did not play into our favor as it was the coldest week filled with rain. But due to our team’s teamwork and determination, we made it through. We stood by each other through the thick and thin which strengthened our relationships.

I went a day earlier and stayed the first night with David, Aryaman, and Napat to try to climatize and to try to get over jet lag at my place down in ascot. It was a time to bond before the trip so our relationship was already strengthened before the trip.

We met up with the main group the following day and quickly organized ourselves for departure.

For the first 3 days, we managed to quickly organize our preparations like food and the map. While other groups struggled with conflicting ideas, we manage to negotiate on the best way to deal with situations. We split our labor into 2 parts, food and map to increase our productivity and manage to swiftly finish our preps.

While hiking, we managed to stay positive even when we thought of giving up. We sang songs and cracked a few jokes from time to time to keep a positive mindset in the horrible and rainy days we had. I somehow managed to fall waist deep into a bog but my team manages to swiftly pull me out and carried on going. The conditions were horrible but it didn’t stop us from getting organized and cooking.

I have to say, even though we had the worst possible weather there, we managed to make it an enjoyable trip overall and I would highly recommend it for other NYAA participants in the coming years

Heather

Hi, I’m Heather and I’m a middle school student from UWCSEA. I was born in Singapore and have not moved ever since!:) A few of my hobbies would be, boxing, talking to my friends, playing guitar and singing. Art is also a big part of my life, I find that when I sometimes get stressed or if I am not feeling very well, then I can release my feelings onto a canvas. When I am also trying to remember lyrics, I create a picture or a story line within what the song means. This means that when I am performing I have something to follow, in case I forget the lyrics I will just make something up along the storyline. This piece of artwork I have done reminded me of a set of doors my grandparents' friends have. During the winter I usually go over to their place for a while to catch up and drink hot tea, I have always remembered their door because they always decorate it so lovely with flowers and ribbons. Whenever I go over to their house I always feel warm, cozy and very comfortable. That is the feeling I am hoping to give to the viewers of my artwork. I believe the door makes a difference to a house. Picture this, having a really really old creaking door as an entrance to a beautiful tall mansion. Any door to any house gives an influence to the rest of it. The door adds effect onto the house and gives it a first impression before you enter. I have not completed my work completely as yet, but I’m wide open to suggestions that you might have! Best Regards, Heather
